EXHIBIT AT RENCONTRES

Identidade Poética
(Poetic Identity)

A series of anonymous portraits, Identidade Poética reproduces the black and white identity photos used for official documents. Each image is marked with seals, like so many successive imprints that endeavor to confine our identities. Délio Jasse dug them up at Lisbon’s Feira da Ladra flea market. Now detached from any context, these found photographs catalogue nameless faces and lend them a new presence. With these clues, evocative of ethnographic activity, the artist questions the documentary role of the photograph. Attentively and solicitously he enhances them so that we look at these fragile portraits, bereft of history and place, in a different way.
